COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS
JUNIORS - DIVISION 1B
Dorset 7-3 Berkshire
Match report submitted by Mike Smith
Dorset juniors played their first of three home fixtures
on Saturday 18th of January at Bournemouth Sports
Club. The visiting Berkshire side were of an unknown
quantity, but were known to be playing Lisa Bosley, the
England no ? Ranked cadet. With the girls playing four of
the ten games, and Lisa expected to win both of her games,
this meant that there was an extra pressure on the team to
play at their best to ensure a result.
The pressure was compounded when James Whitehorn, playing
at no 2 for the boys, pulled a muscle in his back two weeks
before the match. Charlie Joyce, a very capable player from
Dorchester, was put on standby to play in case James could
not play. Luckily (sorry Charlie) James was OK and did play.
In the first game of the match James beat the Berkshire
no 1 in three straight sets much to the relief of the Dorset
camp. Neil Cartwright easily won the next game against the
Berkshire no 2, followed by Joy Whitehorn who won a crucial
game against the Berkshire no 2.
From then on it was plain sailing for Dorset. Lisa Bosley
won her two games as expected, but was nearly beaten by
Ellen Turner, the Dorset no 2, who smashed Lisa off the
table whenever the ball was high enough.
In the end Dorset won by a comfortable 7 games to 3, putting Dorset two
points clear at the top of division 2b.
