COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS

JUNIORS - DIVISION 1B

 Surrey III   1-9   Dorset
Surrey II     3-7   Dorset

Match report submitted by Mike Smith

Congratulations to the Dorset Junior Table Tennis Team who move into top place in division 2b of the County Championships after convincing victories against strong opposition from Surrey.

The Surrey 3 side were thought to be fairly weak but the Surrey 2 side were known to be quite strong and bidding for a promotion place.

In the first match of the day at New Malden in Surrey, Surrey 2 beat Surrey 3 easily by 10 games to nil, and were obviously confident that they could beat Dorset on there own soil.

Surrey then, fortunately for Dorset, made a tactical error by scheduling Dorset to play Surrey 3 instead of Surrey 2. This enabled Dorset to play what was effectively a warm-up match against fairly weak opposition, running out 9-1 winners, before meeting a strong Surrey 2 side. This meant that the Dorset team was match ready, with high confidence after winning the first match and in determined mood.

In the second match, the Dorset side, always supporting one another, fought for every point and won a thrilling match with close games by 7 games to 3.

Man of the match must go jointly to James Whitehorn who just beat the Surrey no.1 in the fifth and deciding game, whilst his sister Joy (12 years old on the previous Monday) showed her class and determination by beating the Surrey no 1 girl in another close contest. Both matches took place at the same time and the atmosphere whilst these matches were being played was electric. These two victories for Dorset, which should have been ‘banker’ matches for Surrey, completely demoralised the home side and Dorset ran out easy victors in the end.

Dorset has now played 4 matches, all away. They drew against Bucks 3 in the first match, beat Oxford in the second match and have now beaten Surrey 2 and Surrey 3. All Dorset’s remaining matches will be at home and will be played at Bournemouth Sports Table Tennis Club next to Hurn Airport.
